Rob's Mysterious Bug

I opened my front door Saturday afternoon to see one of the weirdest, freakiest looking bugs I’ve ever seen. I’ll be honest, I haven’t done any research as to what it is, other than showing my wife the picture. She grew up in the area and swears it’s what locals have always called “Sacramento moths.” This of course is ridiculous to me since I have lived here for 10 years and never seen one of these. She was not phased; says she grew up with them…WTF? IS this really a giant moth?
From a distance, it looks like an enormous moth; truth is, though, that even from here I knew it was too big to be a moth.
 
Here it is as close as I could get while still providing perspective. It was literally two inches long top to bottom and as you can see it clearly has wings, though it was not spooked by me or my presence or the sounds of the camera…so what the hell is it?
